Wed, May. 7th, 2008, 01:47 pm "It was the year everything changed."

You know, I'm simply amazed that nobody's noticed that today is the tenth anniversary of the launch of the original iMac. (I used to kick myself for having let my ex-wife whine persuade me that buying Apple stock at $12 a share at the beginning of 1998 was A Bad Idea, because I was ready to put down $1200 to get in on The Age of Steve Jobs. These days, I'm glad I didn't, because I would have had to give half of my stock to her.) Wed, May. 7th, 2008 06:56 pm (UTC)

I constantly beat up on myself for not doing that with some of my daughter's college money. I feared I was not being objective, that I was a remote-control victim of Steve Jobs' legendary Reality Distortion Field. Of course, had I done so, her college would be paid for already. Oh, I really wanted to do so, but the request not to do so came from the same woman whose objection to my starting a 401(k) was "And how is this going to affect our standard of living?" I sure hope she likes the taste of cat food in her old age. Thu, May. 8th, 2008 03:07 am (UTC)

For the longest time, Apple's stock hovered between $12 and $17. When I got married, I figured we could use the money and I sold at $18. Soon after, it finally broke $19 and started up. Other friends of mine bailed at $36, convinced it was due to crash back down. D'oh! Wed, May. 7th, 2008 08:09 pm (UTC)

I love the way Apple put together their computers. So beautiful and sleek. Unfortunately I hate the UI and the one-button track pad (and I hate having an external 3-button mouse even more, as I'm always on the move). Wed, May. 7th, 2008 08:34 pm (UTC)

All of that has been changed in recent years. OSX is quite honestly elegant, and I've been using a Windows-standard two-button mouse for the last year. Thu, May. 8th, 2008 02:58 am (UTC)

The newer laptops, while still having one button, have, on the track pad, added two finger tap for right-click and two finger drag for scroll. Of course, there's still one finger tap for left click. I don't even touch the button below the track pad anymore. But yeah, the one button mouse has always bugged me. I have a collection of Kensington trackballs, going back to '89. Love my multiple, programmable buttons! Wed, May. 7th, 2008 08:32 pm (UTC)

I WOULD be kicking myself, were it not for the fact that I was 15 at the time, and was using most of my earnings to buy candy and gaming books. I still kinda want one of those original beasties. Wed, May. 7th, 2008 11:09 pm (UTC)

Heh, still have my first Mac (SE: runs Minix) and my Quadra 650. The Quadra is maxed out at 132 MB RAM, can run three monitors, has two 2GB scsi drives (replaced floppy drive) and runs Photoshop 2.5 lightning fast (Supermac card with DSP's for Photoshop filters). I can't get rid of it as it's never broken down. Also, it works with my tabloid size scanner. Thu, May. 8th, 2008 04:38 am (UTC)
